History of Lancaster, Ohio
In 1800, Ebenezer Zane established the settlement of Lancaster, Ohio where Zane's Trace crossed the Hocking River. German settlers used the road to travel west from Pennsylvania and settled Lancaster. Lancaster became an important business center in Ohio and a number of craftsmen and small businesses were located here. By 1812, Lancaster had approximately 350 residents and was the Fairfield County seat.
Lancaster experienced tremendous growth after the completion of the Lancaster Lateral Canal in 1834. The Hocking Canal connected Lancaster to Athens, Ohio, in 1841. Lancaster gained additional markets for its products in 1854, after a railroad came to town. Most early businesses were linked to agriculture, but cloth production, glass production and the drilling of natural gas also spurred Lancaster's good fortunes. Glass dinnerware produced in Lancaster spread across the United States due to the canals and railroads.
