About Canal Winchester

Located midway between Columbus and Lancaster, Canal Winchester has managed to hold its own among these booming metropolises. True to its agricultural roots, the original village of Canal Winchester planted seeds that have sprouted into what is now a prosperous city. This city is proud of its unique rural culture and has humbly grown over the years to its current population of more than 8,500 residents. 

Here in Canal Winchester, you'll find that the city's heart beats off its strong history—one that started with a man wanting to sue the state of Ohio. In 1828, Reuben Dove founded Canal Winchester, and when construction of the Ohio & Erie Canal came through Dove's wheat field, he wanted to sue the state. Convinced otherwise by some wise canal workmen, Dove decided to build a town that would run alongside the canal and be close to the state capital of Columbus. Thanks to his change of heart, we have what is now the humble city of Canal Winchester.
